PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR SUBMISSIONS. CHECK BACK WITH US IN SPRING 2024.

SHARK REEF endeavors to give voice to serious artists and writers who  are committed to producing original writing of high quality. We are  particularly passionate about publishing work revealing the rich  experiences of ordinary people, whether as fiction, non-fiction, drama,  poetry or visual art.

SHARK REEF is not currently a paying market, but how we wish we were! Our magazine is available online at no cost to readers, and we don’t have any advertising revenue. We’re all volunteers: editors, writers, visual artists, publisher, and editorial assistants. With the publication of each issue, we make a concerted effort to promote the work of our contributors via Facebook and Instagram.

Please note that we do not consider genre fiction: fantasy,  thriller, sf, horror or erotica. We prefer work that does not employ extreme violence and graphic sexuality in order to get its point across.

To be sure your submission receives our full consideration, please proofread your text carefully; spelling, grammatical and mechanical mistakes may prevent us from giving your work the full editorial attention it deserves.

We do not remit payment for submissions or selections and do not require any legal document to change hands. Selections are posted as our Current Issue until the next issue comes out and then moved to the Archives.

As all evaluation of art is subjective, we  make no bones about the fact that our selections are informed by our own  tastes, whims, and fancies. We encourage you to review past issues of  SHARK REEF to get a sense of our editorial preferences.

SHARK REEF  is published in January (submission deadline September 30) and July  (submission deadline March 31). Submissions are rolling, but please note: if you submit after the seasonal deadline, your submission will be held over for consideration for the next issue. Simultaneous submissions are considered;  please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.

At SHARK REEF Literary Magazine we stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, and in recognition of the racial injustice that permeates our society, including creative and literary communities, we are hereby waiving the submission fee for Black writers, Indigenous writers, and writers of Color.

We welcome previously unpublished poetry, up to three poems. We will review your submission and acknowledge acceptance within three months. No multiple submissions per issue, please.

Submissions should be in 12-point type, double-spaced (except for poetry) and numbered pages. On the first page of the submission, please include author’s name, address, telephone number, email address and a brief bio. If your submission does not follow these guidelines, we may not accept it. We may edit your work or suggest changes but will ask for your approval before it appears.
